Word Wall Words

I use a Word Wall in my classroom.
Using a Word Wall has proven to be an effective way to teach children how to decode new words.  This is a newer way to teach Phonemic Awareness or Phonics.  Research has shown that there are some spelling patterns that frequently appear in the English language.  It has also been proven that children, by using patterns in Math, Reading, etc. can learn faster.  The known spelling pattern, chunk, or part is what is used to figure out new and bigger words.

Every week we introduce at least 5 words: usually 2-4 words have a specific spelling pattern and the others are considered high frequency words.  Once the words are presented and then put onto our Word Wall the children are responsible for spelling these words correctly in all of their writing.  It is very important that each child knows the word as well as the part.  For example because you know 'car' you can use the spelling pattern to figure out the word 'march'.

Word Wall Words are not included on the weekly spelling test.

By the end of the school year, students should be able to read all words on the word wall.  Feel free to use this list to work with your child on learning these words.
